THANKSGIVING HOURS ANNOUNCED;GARBAGE COLLECTION SCHEDULES CHANGE

 Sarasota, FL:  Solid waste collection schedules will be modified this week due to the Thanksgiving holiday. There will be no garbage, recycling, and yard waste pickup on thanksgiving-2016-scheduleThanksgiving Day, Thursday, November 24.

Holiday collection will be delayed one day:

  • Thursday collection will occur one day later on Friday, November 25
  • Friday collection will be one day later on Saturday, November 26

City of Sarasota administration offices will be closed Thursday and Friday in observance of Thanksgiving.  All offices will reopen on Monday, November 28.

Hours of operation at recreation facilities will vary:

FPL CONTRACTOR BREAKS WATER LINE ALONG N. TAMIAMI TRAIL; TEMPORARY WATER OUTAGE & LANE REDUCTION

Sarasota, FL: A Florida Power & Light contractor ruptured a City of Sarasota water main this afternoon prompting water service to be shut down to customers in the N. Tamiami Trail/Remington Drive vicinity.

The impacted area is limited, along N. Tamiami Trail from Remington Drive toremington-break 47th Street. An emergency contractor is en route to make the necessary repairs as quickly as possible. Water service is expected to be restored by midnight.

It is unknown at this time how many water customers are affected. Most are businesses located along N. Tamiami Trail.

Southbound U.S. 41 (N. Tamiami Trail) temporarily is reduced to one lane near Mecca Drive due to the water main break. Flag people are on site directing traffic.

PARKING SUPERVISOR HONORED WITH STATE INDUSTRY AWARD

Sarasota, FL:  Cheryl Woodard, Parking Supervisor for the City of Sarasota, is the recipient of the Florida Parking Association’s 2016 Carol Easterling Award, Central Region. This prestigious award recognizes an individual’s exemplary professionalism and work ethic in the parking industry.

“Cheryl is very deserving of this honor,” said Parking Manager Mark Lyons, who nominated Ms.cheryl-woodard Woodard for the award. “Her willingness to step out and work beyond her duties and level of responsibilities is exemplary. She’s the type of employee who never misses a day of work, and is a shining example to her staff.”

Ms. Woodard is one of three statewide finalists who will be considered for top honors during the 2016 Florida Parking Association annual conference next month in Championsgate, Florida near Orlando. As a finalist, all her conference expenses will be covered by the FPA.

Ms. Woodard has been an employee with the City of Sarasota since 2007 and was promoted to Parking Supervisor in 2011. She currently oversees seven parking enforcement employees, parking fine collections, and the parking permit program.

“Using her friendly demeanor and infectious smile, Cheryl makes everyone she contacts during the day feel better,” said Mr. Lyons. “The parking team’s performance has improved year over year. We’re proud her peers in the parking industry are recognizing and honoring her outstanding work at the City of Sarasota.”

VETERANS DAY PARADE & CEREMONY TO BE HELD NOV. 11

Sarasota, FL: The public is invited to attend the annual Veterans Day parade in downtown Sarasota on Veterans Day, Friday, November 11 starting at 10 a.m.   Hosted by the City of Sarasota in conjunction with the Sarasota Patriotic Observance Committee, the parade will begin at Main Street and Osprey Avenue.   At the conclusion of the parade, a ceremony will be held at Selby Five Points Park in downtown at approximately 11 a.m.

The theme for the 2016 Veterans Day ceremony is “We Thank You For Your Service”.   The paradeparade and ceremony continue Sarasota’s longstanding history of honoring military personnel.

The keynote speaker will be retired Lt. Ryan Simonson, a West Point graduate, who served in the United States Army for 13 years. He served multiple tours in Iraq during Operation Iraqi Freedom and was honored with many military decorations including the Bronze Star. Simonson currently teaches military studies at the Sarasota Military Academy.

Units appearing in the parade will include: veterans service organizations, law enforcement agencies, fire departments, color guards, marching bands, local high school Junior Reserve Officers’ Training Corps units, civic organizations and historical military equipment.

Sarasota, FL:  City of Sarasota administration offices will be closed Friday, November 11 in observance of Veterans Day. Solid waste, recycling and yard waste will be picked up as usual.

City of Sarasota recreational facilities will be open regular hours:

  • Bobby Jones Golf Club: 6:30 a.m. – 6 p.m.
  • Lido Pool: 10 a.m. – 4:45 p.m.
  • Robert L. Taylor Community Complex: 6 a.m. – 9 p.m.

The Sarasota Patriotic Observance Committee will host the annual Veterans Day parade starting at 10 a.m. at Main Street and Osprey Avenue in veterans-daydowntown. A ceremony will follow at approximately 11 a.m. at Selby Five Points Park.
