Sarasota, FL: The City of Sarasota, in conjunction with the Sarasota Patriotic Observance Committee, will host the annual Memorial Day parade in downtown Sarasota on Memorial Day, Monday, May 30 at 10 a.m.
The annual event will begin at Main Street and Osprey Avenue. Due to construction, this year the parade will conclude at Selby Five Points Park where a ceremony will begin at approximately 11 a.m. The public is encouraged to attend.
The theme for the 2016 ceremony is “Legacy: A Debt Owed”. The keynote speaker will be Todd Hughes, who joined the Oklahoma National Guard in 1999 when he was in high school. Three years later, he volunteered for active duty and was deployed to Iraq where he served as a member of the 1st Cavalry Division. Toward the end of his deployment, Mr. Hughes was wounded by an improved explosive device (IED).
