NEW CITYWIDE GEOGRAPHIC INFORMATION WEBSITE AVAILABLE

Sarasota, FL: A new website featuring an array of detailed information about the City of Sarasota including the location of utility lines, bike paths, neighborhood associations, emergency shelters, and more is now available on the City of Sarasota website www.SarasotaGov.com. To get started, click the round ‘GIS’ icon on the left side of the homepage.

GIS Website

A page on the new website showing where the potable water and reclaimed water networks are located near City Hall.

Known as GIS, this geographic information system provides extensive information in a layered mapping format at no cost. The Utilities Department, in cooperation with the Information Technology Division and other departments, developed the website in order to increase staff efficiency and improve asset management.

“It’s similar to Google Earth – but, the user can search for information specific to the City of Sarasota,” said Susan Blake, Infrastructure Information Coordinator with the Utilities Department. “As we were developing this GIS site for City of Sarasota staff to use, we considered how the public could use it as well. We receive quite a few phone calls from construction contractors, engineers, and architects wanting information about the size of water lines, fire hydrant locations and other utility issues. So, this information being easily accessible on the internet will be very useful for staff and the public.”

Multiple search categories, called layers, are available including: Utilities, Public Works, FEMA/Emergency, Neighborhoods, and Community Interest. Within each layer, more layers provide further detailed information on the map.

“Layers upon layers of information are available,” said Ms. Blake. “Just within the Utilities category you can locate the potable water, reclaimed water, and wastewater networks, manholes, laterals, lift stations, water meters, fountains, and a lot more. City of Sarasota crews working in the field with a mobile device will be able to retrieve information without having to return to the office. So, this will result in a more efficient use of time.”

As new information becomes available, the website will be updated. Plans also are in the works to add more ‘Community Interest’ layers.

For more information please contact Susan Blake, Infrastructure Information Coordinator: 941-365-2200 ext. 6212.

Sarasota, FL: A new website providing information about a significant future project on Osprey Avenue is now available. The website can be found at: www.OspreyAveImprovements.com

The Osprey Avenue infrastructure improvement project will include: Osprey Ave_upgrading major utility mains, sidewalks, new curbing, driveway aprons, and resurfacing the road – all in two phases.

The construction work will be split into segments within two phases:

  • Phase I: Siesta Drive to Bahia Vista Road – scheduled to begin in January 2017
  • Phase II: Novus Street to Main Street – scheduled to begin in March 2017.

“The City’s infrastructure located along this important street no longer provides the level of service to meet our standards,” said Bill Swick, City of Sarasota Project Manager. “The City has a continuing program of replacing failing infrastructure and Osprey Avenue’s time has now come. We understand there will be a level of inconvenience and we’ll do our best to minimize the impact. We’re reaching out to residents well in advance so the community is aware of this pending project.”

To minimize motorists’ inconvenience and maximize productivity, the City is taking extra measures to ensure these Utilities and Public Works projects are combined and the timing coordinated.

The dedicated website, www.OspreyAveImprovements.com provides an overview of the project, construction schedule and frequently asked questions. A link to the website is posted on the City of Sarasota website www.SarasotaGov.com and can be found by clicking the construction hard hat on the homepage.

Sarasota, FL:  Starting Tuesday, May 17, Dr. MLK, Jr. Way between U.S. 301 and Central Avenue will be resurfaced. The project is expected to be finished by the end of the month, weather permitting.

MLK Way

Dr. MLK, Jr. Way will be resurfaced starting May 17, 2016.

First, the street will be milled. Crews will begin at Central Avenue and head east to U.S. 301 then turnaround and return to Central Avenue. The actual resurfacing is scheduled to begin on Monday, May 23 and take at least one week to complete.

Please note: Two-way traffic will be maintained with one lane open intermittently. Flag people will be on site to assist with traffic control. To reduce potential traffic congestion, residents are encouraged to use alternative routes during the resurfacing project.

This repaving project is part of the annual citywide repaving program. This year, approximately 14 miles of streets will be resurfaced. The timing of the resurfacing of Dr. MLK, Jr. Way was coordinated to coincide with the conclusion of the Dr. MLK, Jr. Way Streetscape improvement project.

The streetscape is a significant community investment with new bulb outs, bus shelters, improved lighting, trees and vegetation, brick pavers and angled on-street parking along Dr. MLK, Jr. Way. Where possible, the sidewalks were widened to promote a more enjoyable pedestrian experience.
