Engineering Department Headline

Coastal Engineering

The City of Sarasota includes the beautiful public beach on Lido Key. The City maintains a coastal engineering program focused on repair and renourishment of the beach. In addition, the new Bayfront Mooring Field is a project that falls under the Engineering Department's responsibilities.

Over a decade ago, the Engineering Department began the task of restoring one of Sarasota's most treasured assets, Lido Beach on beautiful Lido Key. The beach has been subjected to heavy storms in recent years, causing severe erosion. Erosion on such a scale has been blamed for, among other things, displacing much needed sea-life ecosystems that help to keep our oceans in balance. Erosion definitely has an adverse impact on the City's tourism industry. In partnership with the State Government, the Engineering Department and the City's consulting engineers, Coastal Planning and Engineering, Inc. (CPE), devised the long-range Lido Key Beach Erosion Control Project, which will help assure the preservation of Lido Beach for residents and visitors for many years to come.
